Work
Are you a liar?
Yet another reason employers are using to curtail WFH. This post claims that employers are concerned that they are putting their data at risk by having their employees work from home, namely, because “some” employees, like those who work in IT, are outsourcing their work.
“Managers who miss the office could have one more reason to push back against remote work: employee scams. Some people hired for fully remote roles in industries like IT are outsourcing their jobs to freelancers, exposing companies to risks like data leaks.” More
Leadership
An excerpt from my most recent leadership article on Medium.
“Communication is literally the life blood of your organization. And if you skimp on communication as a leader, you’re bound to fail — no matter how competent you are.
Maladaptive communication as a leader translates to more turnover, less productivity, low morale and a toxic work environment. But agile communication is flexible and meets the needs of the organization.” More

CDC loosens guidance
According to this post on LinkedIn, “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has significantly loosened its COVID-19 guidance for businesses and schools, eliminating previous recommendations for quarantining, routine testing and social distancing.”
I think we may be at a point where we can manage our individual risks around COVID-19 with all of the tools we have in place. Our number one tool, though, is taking care of ourselves through good diet, exercise, and sufficient sleep. More

Wait, when did the Buccaneers sign Julio jones?
I had no idea the Bucs signed Julio Jones. I think he makes a great target for Tom Brady. It’s going to be interesting to watch what happens with this team. They seem to have a solid receiving core despite injuries and losing Antonio Brown. More

Career
Job red flags
I’ve been on plenty of interviews this year, 14 total, from about 7 different companies. And let me tell you. The experience I’ve had varies from company to company with most being positive and some there were glaring red flags in hindsight. I checked this LinkedIn post out and thought it was pretty insightful, considering that I’m still in the job search phase of my career shift. More
Quiet Quitting
Work-life balance amongst our generation has manifested itself in interesting ways. A new trend called “quiet quitting” has emerged, in which people do the bare minimum, clock out exactly at 5 or hand in subpar work. Interesting concept. Some people believe it’s justified because employers pay way below what they’re worth. On the other hand I believe in “growing where we’re planted.” Get as much experience as possible and bounce. Because when you do things like this, not doing the best you can, it spills over into other areas of your life. More
Non-compete Clauses
Becareful with these. I recently came across a non-compete clause that was vague and restrictive. If I were you, I’d try to avoid them as much as possible. If you don’t know, non-compete clauses stipulate, something to the effect of, restricting you from working with the companies “competitors” during your employment and up to a specified length of time AFTER your employment ends with your employer. To me, this is a red flag. I get it, the company is trying to protect their interests and secrets. But the issue here is that your employment with the company can end for any reason at all, and you’re not allowed to start your own business in the same industry that competes or work for another company in that same realm that competes with that business. We all know that it’s hard to switch fields and after employment ends with one company you’ve built skills with in a particular industry. It’s easier to move onto another company in the same field. I don’t know. This is something that I’m not too fond of.
Economy
Inflation shows signs of slowing
Apparently, inflation is showing signs of slowing down. According to this LinkedIn post,
“The annual inflation rate in the US slowed to 8.5% from a 40 year high of 9.1% in July helped by more benign prices for Gasoline, Natural Gas, New Vehicles and airfares.”
I guess this is a good thing. Let’s see what happens. Fingers crossed. More

Education
The average four-year degree is trash.
Unless you’re going into engineering, medicine, law or something domain specific and has utility, don’t waste your time with college. This post calls into question the value of college degrees in the possible wake of Bidens loan forgiveness plans. Either way, I think we’re better off learning specific skills and building personal media around those skills so that we can market them. More
Cybersecurity
It’s all rolling down hill…
Apparently, companies are compensating for data breaches by increasing prices consumers pay for their services.
“Sixty percent of breaches have resulted in companies recouping the cost of fines, clean-up, and technological improvements by increasing prices, essentially making consumers pay for breaches and companies' lack of preparedness, according to an annual report published on July 27.” More
Cisco was breached 🥲
Cisco was the victim of a ransomware attack.
“Cisco has now stated that the Yanluowang ransomware organization infiltrated their corporate network in late May and that the actor attempted to extort money from them by threatening to post stolen material online.” More

Whole Foods shoppers will soon be able to pay with their palm
Whole Foods shoppers will soon be able to pay for their goods with their palms. I’m not too sure how to feel about this. I mean, we already use our biometric data for a multitude of things but maybe it’s biometrics coupled with paying that’s creepy to me. But then again, biometrics is a factor for authentication, just like a card and a pin is as well, right? More
YouTube is beating out TikTok amongst teens?
It's been reported that some 95% of teens use YouTube compared to 67% using TikTok. That's interesting because I would have assumed it would be the other way around. More

What I’m listening to this week 🎵
Artist: Backwhen
Backwhen is an artist I’ve been listening to in various mixes for the past few months now. I’d describe his music as a mix of trap, wave and edm. It’s dope. Listen below.
